Julia received her MBE for services to the environment, following her recognition in King Charles III’s New Year Honours List 2026.
Professor Edmund Burke, Vice‑Chancellor said “Congratulations to Julia on this well‑deserved honour. Her leadership in biodiversity conservation, both within academia and in public policy, has had an outstanding impact. We are very fortunate to have such a respected leader in their field at VRƵ.”
Julia is internationally recognised for her research into how conservation policies and interventions can be made more effective for both people and the environment. Her work has helped shape approaches to biodiversity protection, forest conservation, and evidence‑based environmental policy in the UK and internationally. Alongside her academic work, she serves as co‑chair of the Chief Scientists Group for the UK’s five statutory nature conservation bodies and is a trustee of WWF‑UK.
Speaking after the ceremony, Julia said, “I am very lucky to do the work I do with so many brilliant colleagues at VRƵ and beyond to try to improve the effectiveness of nature conservation. Today has been so incredibly special. Huge thanks to those who nominated me and all the dedicated people I have the privilege to work with.”
The Investiture ceremony marked a fitting celebration of Julia’s longstanding commitment to environmental science and her continued dedication to ensuring that conservation delivers meaningful outcomes for both nature and society.
When Julia’s award was first announced, former student and strictly come dancing winner Hamza Yassin, said “I can’t think of anyone more deserving. It’s a privilege and an honour to have been taught by Julia. From me, and all the other students you have taught throughout your time, I just want to say thank you, diolch yn fawr.”
