House of the Dragon is HBO鈥檚 hit fantasy drama and prequel to the award-winning Game of Thrones, which aired from 2011 to 2019. The series features a star-studded cast including Welsh actor Rhys Ifans and The Crown鈥檚 Matt Smith, and many of the scenes for the third series were filmed in North Wales.
Kieran, who was a third鈥憏ear student at the time of the placement, spent six weeks working with the Lighting Department, a team that collaborates closely with the Camera Department on one of the world鈥檚 most visually ambitious television productions. The placement was arranged through Screen Alliance Wales as part of the Creative Wales initiative to provide high鈥憅uality industry opportunities for young people in Wales.
Kieran from Holyhead, who filmed with the crew in June 2025, said, "Working on House of the Dragon as a lighting trainee was an incredible experience. It taught me how to paint with lighting and gave me the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals on a world-class production. Seeing how every department worked together has inspired me as I begin my career in the screen industries."
During his time on set, Kieran gained hands鈥憃n experience alongside industry professionals and had the chance to observe large鈥憇cale production workflows at close range. His placement also offered a unique insight into the creative and technical processes behind one of HBO鈥檚 flagship series.
Students from the School of Arts, Culture and Language were also invited to a set visit at Llanddwyn, where the production was filming. Professor Ruth McElroy, Head of the School of Arts and Culture, and Professor Edmund Burke, Vice鈥慍hancellor visited the set with the students.
