Did you know?

As Medical Sciences, Biomedical Science and Pharmacology have a common first year you have the flexibility to change courses from second year onwards. It can be hard to know before you've started what areas of medical sciences you'll find most interesting so this means you have the chance to figure it out during year one.

Our IBMS-accreditation for our Biomedical Science programme helps prepare you for the fast paced and interesting work of a modern day pathology laboratory with disciplines ranging from organising blood transfusions to detecting viral infections in patients.

Our Medical Sciences degree is a pathway to our Graduate Entry Medicine programme for those who graduate with at least a 2:1. Please note that additional entry requirements also apply.

Practical training builds your skills in areas like genetics, microbiology, and disease mechanisms, preparing you for diverse career paths.

What’s your favourite part of your job?
Seeing students on their graduation day is incredibly special. It’s the culmination of all their hard work, dedication, and perseverance—and knowing I’ve been a part of their journey is deeply rewarding.

What’s a fun fact about you that students might not know?
I have a dog named Dippy, who’s often a popular feature in my sessions! I love sharing photos of her to brighten up my lecturers.

What’s one thing you think every student should experience at Bangor?
Immerse yourself in the local area. Bangor is very student-friendly and inclusive, with lots to explore. Plus, the Bangor catering brownies are delicious!

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
Believe in your abilities and ensure you always ask the staff for support (too many students sit in silences struggling with their studies), reaching out for support is the most important aspect of being a successful student.

What’s a fun fact about you that students might not know?
I am a ex-international Lacrosse player, I am related to Kylie Minogue, and am an avid Warhammer 40k player (and currently am the 40k officer for Deeside Defender Gaming Club).

What do you love most about teaching?
There are many aspects, some examples include having engaging discussions with students on new scientific discoveries and seeing students develop their understanding over the years of study.

Pharmacology Programme Lead Dr Joanna Edwards

What’s your favourite part of your job?
Getting to talk about pharmacology all day! I fell completely in love with the subject within a couple of months of starting my own undergraduate degree in pharmacology many years ago, and I decided then that I wanted to spend my life teaching other people about it, and I feel very lucky that I can.

What do you love most about teaching?
Being able to support the students through what can sometimes be a difficult time as they adapt to life at Uni. I get a huge amount of satisfaction from seeing students grow, gain confidence, and realise their potential.

What’s a fun fact about you that students might not know?
I have pet cockroaches!

What’s your favourite part of your job?
I love connecting with students and seeing them grow from first-year nerves to confident thinkers. There’s something incredibly rewarding about witnessing those “aha!” moments when challenging concepts suddenly make sense, and I’m honoured to be both a guide and cheerleader on their academic journeys. Watching students build confidence, ask deeper questions, and make connections they hadn’t considered is priceless.

What’s a fun fact about you that students might not know?
I'm easily distracted by animals—if there's a furry, feathered, or even scaly creature nearby, you’ve probably lost me! If I weren’t a scientist, I’d be a veterinarian, a farmer, or a zookeeper!

What’s your favourite part of your job?
I love seeing students develop both academically and personally during their time with us. Watching them make connections between complex concepts and real-world applications, particularly in biomedical science, is incredibly rewarding.

How would you describe Bangor in three words?
Historic, welcoming, inspiring.

What’s a fun fact about you that students might not know?
Outside of academia, I love to brew mead!

What’s one book or resource you always recommend to students?
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. It’s an essential read for understanding the human stories behind scientific discoveries and the ethical complexities in biomedical research.

Frequently Asked Questions

We understand you may have lots of questions about becoming a student of Medical Sciences of Biomedical Science at Bangor so we've compiled the answers to the most frequently asked questions below.

You will receive your timetable during Welcome Week. Welcome week for 2025 starts on the 22nd of September. The full list of term dates can be found on the University website.

New students will be sent lots of information about Welcome Week and the arrival process before the beginning of term. During Welcome Week there will be plenty of people - staff and students - to guide you. These include Peer Guides, current students who volunteer to help new students to help during the settling-in process. Peer Guides are familiar, friendly faces in the early stages of university life.

Every student at ��VR��Ƶ is also assigned a Personal Tutor, an Academic Staff member who provides personalised academic support and guidance. Your Personal Tutor will meet with you throughout the year to review your grades, discuss employability, and direct you to appropriate student services when needed. They are also responsible for providing academic references for you.

Personal Tutors are dedicated to helping you succeed academically and personally. They can assist with a wide range of issues, from academic challenges to career planning. In addition to regular meetings, you can reach out to your tutor whenever you need extra support or advice.

We place a high priority on caring and supporting our students and are well placed to do so due to the smaller teaching groups. As well as the support you will receive from your academic team, the university’s student services department offers a range of assistance to ensure that you thrive during your time with us.

There are lots of arranged activities during Welcome Week that provide opportunities for you to meet and get to know other students on your course. These include events led by the course leads, such as quizzes.

At ��VR��Ƶ we also have a wide range of student societies and clubs helping you meet new people and explore new and existing interests. Our student society organises events and socials and are active on and .

Medical Sciences: you’ll consider human health and disease at a micro and macro level.

Biomedical Science: you’ll study a wide range of subjects that underpin the scientific investigation of human health and disease.

Foundation Year students following Medical Sciences, Biomedical Science and Pharmacology will take the same modules.

During Year 01 Medical Sciences, Biomedical Science and Pharmacology students will take the same modules.

Over Year 02 and the Final Year students will follow modules aligned to their respective programme disciplines - concentrating on the knowledge and skills specific to Medical Sciences, Biomedical Science or Pharmacology. In the final year all students will complete a dissertation research project under the supervision of teaching staff.

The Foundation Year is designed to prepare students for all of our undergraduate degree programmes. It is an ideal course if you do not currently have the necessary scientific background to enter our undergraduate programmes.

It provides the basic, but essential understanding of biological and chemical principles that underpin the field.

Welsh-speaking students can complete parts of their degree through the medium of Welsh. Several modules across in each include Welsh-language options. Additionally, any assignment submitted can be written in either English or Welsh, and bursaries are available for students who choose to study part of their degree in Welsh.

Students learning in Welsh benefit from smaller class sizes, excellent peer support, and a Welsh-speaking Personal Tutor. There is also a hall of residence specifically for Welsh speakers and learners, providing a natural Welsh-speaking environment outside of class.

During Welcome Week we’ll have introductory sessions to get everyone together and help them settle in at Bangor. At the beginning of your first week at ��VR��Ƶ, a staff member will be assigned as your personal tutor to ensure your welfare is maintained and to provide pastoral check-ins at least three times a year (once per semester). If your first language is Welsh, we will strive to pair you with a Welsh-speaking personal tutor to facilitate comfortable communication in your native language.

We’ll have Peer Guides to help you in Welcome Week who are current students who have volunteered and have been trained to help new students settle in. They’ll help you make friends through various social events, show you around the town and the University, and give you information and tips about student life.

As well as the support you will receive from your academic team, the university’s student services department offers a range of assistance to ensure that you thrive during your time with us.

"My favourite thing about Medical Sciences at Bangor is the breadth of learning. I like to think of us as broadly educated generalists – we have practical laboratory skills, molecular biology and biochemistry skills, clinical physiology and anatomy, diagnostic skills… It is wonderful to have the opportunity to learn so many different disciplines within the medical field. Because of the huge range of learning on the course, the diversity in the plans and career aspirations of my peers is so inspiring and I am always finding new things to research and look into."

Campus Connect

You'll be able to meet other applicants and be part of our Bangor student community even before arriving! You can join the Campus Connect app when it goes live in February. In the app, you can ask questions, chat with current students and make friends with other applicants on your course and in your chosen accommodation. You'll be invited to join by email, which will also include your ��VR��Ƶ reference number that you'll need to register.
