My name is Lois Nash and I'm a Lecturer here specialising in Criminal and Medical Law.

Studying law is such an exciting thing to do, as you'll have the opportunity to learn about different topics such as public law, criminal law, contract law, amongst other things. There's truly something for everyone.

We do this through large lectures but also small tutorials. We'll have the opportunity to answer questions and get to know the topic a bit better.

For some of our degrees we offer the Legal Advice Clinic. Here's an opportunity for students to interview clients, research the law, and then provide free legal advice. We are small but we are mighty and we look forward to meeting you soon.

Gwawr Owen My experience has been incredible

Studying: Law LLB

Why did you choose to study at 成人VR视频?

鈥淚 wanted a university that would genuinely help me grow into a legal career, and Bangor felt like the perfect fit. The School of Law offered so many hands-on opportunities, from taking part in mock legal disputes to writing articles and getting real experience through the Legal Advice Clinic open to third year students. It was clear that Bangor wouldn鈥檛 just teach me law, it would help me experience it.鈥

How has your experience been so far?

"My experience has been incredible as I have had the opportunity to speak to lawyers, barristers and judges in the area and beyond North Wales. But mainly, I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to develop my academic skills with the firm guidance of tutors and lecturers at this university."

Frequently Asked Questions

A typical week on campus will involve a combination of large-group lectures, smaller discussion-based seminars, and personalised tutorials. You can expect to complement your in-class studies through self-study, where you will work towards completing assignments, preparing for classes, and undertaking recommended/further reading.

You can expect a timetable of 12-15 on-campus contact hours. This will consist of scheduled lectures, seminars, and/or tutorials. You will be expected to prepare for these sessions through completing the recommended reading and undertaking any other tasks that have been set.

There is no pre-reading required before you join us in September however you may be interested in watching some television programmes, listening to audiobooks and podcast that covers different areas of Law.

The first year of a law degree typically introduces you to the fundamental legal concepts and principles. You will study subjects like Law, Justice, and Procedure (an introduction to the Welsh and English Legal System), Contract Law, Criminal Law, Legal Skills, and Public Law. These courses will provide a solid foundation for your subsequent years of study.

To prepare prior to starting your Law Degree, you can read widely by exploring legal news, opinion pieces, and classic texts. You can also practice critical thinking by engaging in debates, discussions, and analytical exercises. Reading surrounding your area of interest would be beneficial, as you will gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of the topic prior to your studies.

Law degrees are demanding and require a significant amount of reading and writing. You will need to be prepared to read legal textbooks, case law, and peer-reviewed academic articles, as well as other sources such as original reports. This will all become a natural part of your self-study time. You will be guided on which legal sources to review; however, independent research is also required.

My time in Bangor was absolutely essential to securing the role I am in today. A huge part of this is the fact that the classes are small. As a result, the lecturers and academic staff had the time and dedication to be able to help each student individually.

Lorraine Barron

Dr Lorraine Barron

Criminal Law and Criminology are both really interesting subjects. I love exploring the theories about why people commit crime (Criminology) and then examining what happens to them when they are apprehended (Criminal Law and Criminal Justice)!

I love when students get really interested in the subject area! I really enjoy reading my student essays on their chosen 'criminal' and the theory they would apply to explain.

Focus on what genuinely excited or intrigues you, and don't be afraid to embrace unexpected opportunities along the way.

The first successful use of the insanity defence came after an attempt to assassinate the British Prime Minister, Robert Peel, in 1843.The assassin, Daniel M鈥橬aghten, believed he was being persecuted by government agents and attempted to kill Prime Minister Peel, but accidentally shot and killed Peel's secretary, Edward Drummond, instead. During the trial, M鈥橬aghten鈥檚 defence argued he was suffering from a delusion due to mental illness, and he was found not guilty by reason of insanity. This case led to the creation of the M鈥橬aghten Rule, a legal standard for insanity that asks whether the defendant could distinguish right from wrong at the time of the crime. The case sparked huge public outrage, with Queen Victoria herself demanding stricter laws. Yet, the M鈥橬aghten Rule became a cornerstone of the insanity defence in criminal law, influencing systems worldwide, and is still referenced in courtrooms today.

Law is a very challenging and stimulating subject due to it's ever-evolving nature. This keeps the subject interesting beyond university study as you are able to witness it's evolution in everyday life!

The smaller teaching groups allow lecturers to develop a strong working relationship with the students. This results in lecturers getting to know the individual learning styles and needs of students.

Don't be afraid to take on challenging tasks and learn from your mistakes.

The power and flexibility of joint honour degree programmes! Through studying this way, you are still able to progress into a legal career, whilst also broadening your career prospects!

One of my A Level Lecturers believed in me and encouraged me to go to University and qualify as a solicitor. I was a first generation University attender so this was a big step for me.

Running the legal advice clinic we deal with most areas of law and really provide a difference to the local community.

Clinic has been hugely supported by the local community which is great to see. Of course the access to beautiful beaches and mountains is also a bonus.

One of the highlights is definitely meeting Lady Hale at one of the LawWorks events. The students loved it too. A truly inspirational woman.

Currently I鈥檓 a Family Law Barrister practicing out of Senate House Chambers, based in Northampton. My practice mostly focuses on work involving children, which can broadly be sub-divided into Private Law and Public Law .
