Research Focus: Amphibian microbiomes and disease ecology in tropical lowland ecosystems
聽Research Description
My research explores the ecological and microbial dynamics of amphibians in the Peruvian Amazon, with a focus on host-pathogen interactions involving Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). Building on recent findings of high Bd prevalence in lowland sites near Los Amigos Biological Station, I investigate how amphibian skin microbiomes may mediate resistance to chytridiomycosis in biodiverse, transitional habitats.
Using a combination of field surveys, molecular diagnostics (PCR, gel electrophoresis), and microbiome profiling, my work aims to:
- Assess Bd infection rates across species and microhabitats
- Characterise skin microbial communities and their potential protective roles
- Identify ecological traits linked to pathogen tolerance and reservoir status
- Contribute to conservation strategies for amphibians in climate-sensitive regions
This research is part of a broader effort to understand disease ecology in tropical systems and inform conservation policy through integrative science communication.
