Professor Zengbo (James ) Wang

Overview

Prof. Zengbo Wang received BSc and MSc degrees in physics from Xiamen University and a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National University of Singapore. He is currently a Professor at 成人VR视频 and was a Visiting Professor at Northeastern University, Boston, USA, from 2022 to 2023. Before joining 成人VR视频 in 2012, he was a Lecturer at the University of Manchester.

His research spans AI and machine learning, nanophotonics, metamaterials, laser-based manufacturing, optical sensing, fibre sensors, solar energy, and AI for business and industry. He is internationally recognised as a leading pioneer of microsphere- and nanosphere-based superlens technologies, with particular expertise in super-resolution microscopy, imaging and sensing, laser micro/nano-processing, and AI-enabled photonic design and manufacturing.

In 2022, he was awarded a Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship to develop AI/deep-learning-assisted microsphere nanoscopy and on-demand photonic design. In 2025, he received the prestigious APEX Award for Listen to the Cell Breathe, an interdisciplinary project investigating viral infections through hybrid nano-vibration sensing, super-resolution imaging, and AI-enhanced analysis. It is the first APEX Award project led by a Principal Investigator based at a Welsh university since the scheme鈥檚 launch in 2017.

His current research vision is centred on agentic AI for science and engineering. His group is developing autonomous laboratory agents for photonic design, laser manufacturing, imaging, and sensing, aiming to connect AI reasoning directly with experimental discovery, instrument control, data analysis, and engineering optimisation.

He is an elected Senior Member of Optica and has a strong publication and citation record. More information about his research group can be found at:

Research Interests

1. Agentic AI and Deep Learning for Photonics Design, Imaging, and Manufacturing

Prof. Wang's current research integrates artificial intelligence across photonics, imaging, sensing, and laser manufacturing, with a long-term vision that extends beyond AI-assisted analysis towards autonomous systems capable of supporting the full scientific workflow 鈥 literature understanding, hypothesis generation, experiment planning, instrument control, data interpretation, and closed-loop optimisation. Drawing on convolutional neural networks, generative models, large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, fine-tuning, and multi-agent architectures, his team pursues inverse photonic design, super-resolution imaging, laser-based nano-patterning, process control, optical sensing, and autonomous laboratory operation. For agentic AI development, his team hosts local LLM such as Qwen3.6 and Gemma4.

The group is developing autonomous lab-agent frameworks in which intelligent agents propose designs, run simulations, interface with instruments, analyse results, and iteratively refine experimental parameters. The team is open to collaboration with business partners seeking to adopt advanced AI technologies, including agentic AI development, to enhance their products, processes, and services.

2. Superlens and Super-resolution Microscopy

Prof. Wang and his team are internationally recognised for pioneering microsphere- and nanoparticle-based dielectric superlens technologies. Key developments include the microsphere superlens and microsphere nanoscope reported in Nature Communications in 2011, the spider-silk superlens reported in Nano Letters in 2016, and the nanoparticle superlens reported in Science Advances in 2016.

This body of work has received international media attention and was highlighted in RCUK鈥檚 鈥50 Big Ideas for the Future鈥. In 2023, it was featured in the article 鈥淩oadmap on Label-Free Super-resolution Imaging鈥 in Laser & Photonics Reviews. The latest nanoparticle superlens developed by his team enables high-quality imaging of nanoscale features, including 50 nm polystyrene nanoparticles, 45 nm gaps in semiconductor chips, and 90鈥100 nm adenoviruses.

The research continues to expand towards AI-enhanced imaging, biological analysis, nanoscale inspection, and integrated imaging-sensing systems.

3. Laser-based Manufacturing and Processing

Prof. Wang鈥檚 group conducts research across a wide range of laser-based manufacturing and surface-processing techniques, including cutting, welding, drilling, texturing, marking, cleaning, polishing, and laser-assisted functionalisation. Applications include advanced thermal management, surface engineering, high-resolution nano-marking, and laser-enhanced biological and materials processing.

The laboratory hosts nanosecond, UV, CO鈧, and high-power femtosecond laser systems, supported by advanced 3D laser scanning microscopy and environmental scanning electron microscopy with integrated electron-beam lithography. Through the pan-Wales Centre for Photonics Expertise programme, the group collaborates with industry across electronics, aerospace, automotive, energy, packaging, and advanced manufacturing.

A distinctive capability of the group is direct laser nano-marking using engineered superlenses, achieving sub-100 nm resolution. This provides a foundation for future AI-controlled, closed-loop laser manufacturing systems.

4. Fibre-based Optical, Biomedical, and Quantum Sensing

Prof. Wang鈥檚 team develops advanced optical sensing technologies for biomedical, environmental, and engineering applications. These include surface-functionalised fibre Bragg grating and long-period grating sensors, optical fibre-based trapping, imaging and sensing, ultrasensitive cell vibration detection at the picometre scale, and emerging quantum sensing platforms.

These capabilities are increasingly integrated with super-resolution imaging and AI-enabled data analysis to support multimodal systems for cell infection studies, environmental monitoring, and high-sensitivity diagnostics.

5. Metamaterial Filters and Optical Protection

Prof. Wang鈥檚 group has developed metamaterial-based, wide-angle, shift-free narrowband filters for anti-laser-strike protection, addressing the angular blue-shift problem commonly found in conventional optical filters. Ongoing work extends this capability towards AI-assisted metamaterial design, optical protection, sensing, and underwater optical communication.

6. Solar Cell and Energy-related Photonics

Prof. Wang鈥檚 research also covers advanced photonic and laser technologies for solar cells and energy applications. This includes laser-trapped nanostructures and metasurfaces for light management, solar-driven nanoparticle synthesis and water splitting, nanophotonic and plasmonic approaches for perovskite solar cells, and precision laser manufacturing to improve solar cell performance.

  • Globally, afforestation is proposed as a nature-based solution to meet Net Zero targets. However, recent evidence suggests that ground-level ozone (O3), formed during photolysis of precursors such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), can decrease net primary productivity (NPP) of plants by 50% with serious implications for ecosystem function and sustainability. Afforestation and ecosystem restoration using natural regeneration and direct seedling are reliant on the continued viability of seed and successful establishment of forests is highly dependent on the mycorrhizal fungal symbiont that facilitates the acquisition of nutrients, improves resilience and connects plants via common mycorrhizal networks. This study will investigate the effect of ground-level O3 on tree seed germination, mycorrhization and seedling viability using cutting-edge visualisation and compound analysis techniques.

  • Spider silk has been used to create a superlens for a microscope, allowing scientists to view objects previously deemed "invisible".

Physical laws of light make it impossible to view structures smaller than 200 nanometers - the smallest size of bacteria - using a normal microscope alone.

But scientists from Bangor and Oxford universities found the silk lets them see beyond the current magnification.

The discovery was hailed as "exciting".

成人VR视频 said extending the limit of the classical microscope's resolution had been the "Holy Grail" of microscopy for over a century and superlenses had been the goal since the turn of the millennium.

Manufactured superlenses have previously been used but this is believed to be the first time a naturally occurring biological material had been used to create one.

The team found applying the dragline silk of a golden silk orb-weaver spider to the material being viewed provided an additional two to three times magnification.

This allowed them to view structures previously classed as "invisible", including some germs and viruses.

The findings have been published in a paper in the nanoscience research journal Nano Letters.

Dr Zengbo Wang, who led Bangor's team, said producing manufactured superlenses involved some complex engineering processes and finding a natural superlens was important "so that everyone can access superlenses".

Prof Fritz Vollrath, whose silk group at Oxford University's department of zoology collaborated on the project, said it was "very exciting".

"These lenses could be used for seeing and viewing previously 'invisible' structures, including engineered nano-structures and biological micro-structures as well as, potentially, native germs and viruses," he said.

"In much the same was as when you look through a cylindrical glass or bottle, the clearest image only runs along the narrow strip directly opposite your line of vision, or resting on the surface being viewed, the single filament provides a one-dimensional viewing image along its length."

The golden silk orb-weaver spider - often called Nephila or banana spiders - are known for the impressive webs they weave and are found in warmer regions around the world.
